BECAUSE IRELAND FEATURES prominently in the Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the country has been going a little bit Star Wars mad in anticipation of the film’s release.
The village of Portmagee, which is just off Skellig Michael, decided to temporarily rename their town to ‘Porgmagee’ until the release date of the movie (which is the 15th of December).
Now Tourism Ireland are taking it a step further.
In what appears to be an attempt to lure extra terrestrials to Irish cinemas, they have launched a billboard with an advertisement for Skellig Michael (due to its appearances in the Star Wars films) into the earth’s stratosphere.
It reads “Visit Earth’s Wild Atlantic Way” and at 33,390 meters, the advertisement is about as close as you can get to space.
On the Tourism Ireland website, they wrote “You don’t have to travel to a galaxy far, far away to discover a landscape that is truly out of this world. Just ask the makers of Star Wars.”
The CEO of the company, Niall Gibbons said that the ‘space tourism publicity stunt’ is just a bit of fun.
The fact that another Star Wars film was shot on location along the Wild Atlantic Way is truly a fantastic coup for Irish tourism. It presents Tourism Ireland with a superb opportunity to highlight the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland in 2018.
Apart from the mountainous island of Skellig Michael, Star Wars will also feature scenery from Cork, Kerry, Clare and Donegal.
